Mechanisms of fire‐maintained plant species diversity in species‐rich wet pine savannas

چکیده

Temperate savannas and grasslands maintained by frequent, low-intensity disturbances such as fire contain among the most species-rich plant communities in world. Precisely how these maintain high fine-scale diversity is poorly understood. This study examined effects of frequency simulated (clipping combined with litter removal) relative importance recruitment survival on species trait composition at each two pine southeastern Mississippi (USA) that had not been recently burned. Ten 2 × m plots site were clipped/cleared annually from 2014 to 2019 again spring 2021 (annual frequency). The other 10 clipping clipped 2018 2020 (reduced Vegetation small subplots annual reduced was compared August test a short period without composition. To composition, four 0.25 quarter established within per following treatment fall assigned factorial arrangement transplantation sods long-unburned areas herbicide application. Reducing altered both sites. A comparison responses transplant treatments revealed affect diversity. Partial or complete recovery removal sites driven rapid increases short-lived, resilient show fire-stimulated emergence seed bank persistence long-lived capable surviving prolonged clipping. Species resilience more likely be lost treatment. Results are consistent model short-term coexistence maximum frequent regime fuels will permit.

Phylogenetic overdispersion of plant species in southern Brazilian savannas.

Ecological communities are the result of not only present ecological processes, such as competition among species and environmental filtering, but also past and continuing evolutionary processes. Based on these assumptions, we may infer mechanisms of contemporary coexistence from the phylogenetic relationships of the species in a community. We studied the phylogenetic structure of plant communi...

Species interaction mechanisms maintain grassland plant species diversity.

Development of theory has outpaced experimental tests for most maintenance of diversity mechanisms. Here we demonstrate how data from biodiversity-ecosystem functioning experiments can be used to determine the mechanisms that maintain plant species diversity. We hypothesized that grassland plant diversity is maintained by two classes of mechanisms: (1) equalizing mechanisms, which reduce asymme...

Diversity of Tropical Spiders - Ground-dwelling Species of Brazilian Savannas

Spiders are one of the biggest and most diverse groups of arthropods. There are around 40000 described species of spiders, belonging to more than 100 families and 3600 genera. However, 170000 species of these arachnids are estimated to exist in the world, which reflects the scantiness of studies about this group. The distribution and diversity of spiders in macro and micro-scale in the tropics ...
